Notaro Memorial Scholarship Winner Collaborator: Nelson de Jesus Ubri Critic: Daisy Ames, Studio Ames Each day, New York City produces 33,000 tons of construction and demolition waste- doubling the daily trash thrown out by residents and businesses. This compelled us to decide that older buildings do not have to come down for new buildings to go up. The goal of this project was to improve light and air quality in existing buildings while providing new housing stock using construction techniques designed to densify and offset carbon emissions. We enhanced our site strategy by providing the infrastructure to deal with organic waste on-site in a closed-loop composting cycle. By choosing to preserve and work within existing buildings, 1,600 tons of solid waste was saved from entering a landfill: equivalent to 54,431 metric tons of CO2 entering the atmosphere. Our approach included other tactics to reinforce our efforts to reduce waste on site: planted balconies, community gardens, green roofs, and mass timber construction, among others. <img width="5750" One such system of violence is the disproportionate risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. There are current federal programs that work to address these disparities, however, when one begins to plot these grantees on a map, a pattern begins to emerge where more resources are allocated to mainly white populations. Because of these histories of exclusion, the Black and Queer community has taken it upon themselves to build their own systems of care from the ground up. One such example is the birth of house culture within the ballroom scene. House culture is organized around two interdependent features: the anchoring family-like structures, called houses, and the competitive performances of gender and sexuality, dance and fashion that houses walk (participate) in. These non-heteropatriarchal families work to offer systems of kinship, support, space, and care; and become safe havens for queer youth. The House of Butter walks in three categories: werk (work), live, and play. A discrete entry on the ground level leads to a central assembly poised to hold events such as a ball, and a bathhouse below grade for individuals to explore their sexuality safely. Space for community-based organizations line the front facade, providing a buffer from the clandestine and private activities held inside. The upper three levels are villas for the constructed families housed on-site. The enfilade is deployed as a method of flexible&nbsp; unit growth and organization for non-conforming family arrangements. By granting the historic Schulze Baking Company Plant to 'The House of Butter’ and compensating them for their work through the re-appropriation of existing federal funds, the state can leverage and expand the House culture’s existing human and social capital within the Black and Queer collective in order to establish a new system of care, protection, kinship, and space for Black and Queer youth />Materializing Arctic Air Sanirajak, Nunavut Fall 2020, Columbia GSAPP + 2020 Buell Center Paris Prize Finalist Collaborator: Audrey Marie Dandenault Critic: Nahyun Hwang, NHDM Our proposal studies air-borne pollution in the Arctic and introduces remediation through the conversion of the Distant Early Warning line, abandoned Cold War era military infrastructure, into a detection, monitoring, collection and extraction system targeting chemicals known as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Characterized by high toxicity levels, exposure causes serious health problems, with the bodies of Arctic people subject to the highest concentrations on Earth. With the majority of emissions occurring below the arctic line, their concentration in the arctic presents an environmental justice crisis. Twelve uniformly distributed sites, selected due to their proximity to Inuit hamlets, become the active hubs of this network. Each site hosts health, education, training, and community oriented programming, with a unique site-specific research and production emphasis in relation to POPs. Sanirajak, a growing Inuit settlement in Nunavut, becomes a pilot site with an emphasis on material production facilities as a remediation technique to capture POPs found in sediment. The environment around Sanirajak is characterized by tundra, continuous permafrost, and the Foxe Basin, a major local life-source. Warming waters and the loss of sea ice have altered arctic eco-structures, creating an accumulation of POPs in the sediment of the Foxe Basin exacerbated by melting permafrost. Sediment-based materials are an ideal recipient for waste and its management by incorporation, capturing pollutants without compromising technical properties. Existing buildings on site are supported by gravel pads 8 feet off-grade, which protect from the freeze/thaw cycle. We propose the recovery of non-essential pads, utilizing the raw material as aggregate in our material production process. By sinking our introduced spaces into the pads, our strategy choreographs snow drifts to increase insulatory capacity, providing a range of spaces sheltered from harsh winds. Environmental constraints and changes establish a new climactic relationship, where weather is negotiated rather than contested. Construction in the Arctic leads to high embodied energy values as building materials are transported over long distances, and harsh environmental conditions increase daily energy demands. The structure, envelope, and finish is a recycled SIP panel filled on-site, with high insulatory qualities and simple assembly procedures. A passive thermosiphon placed underneath the floor slab extracts heat from the ground and discharges it before reaching the permafrost. <img width="1200" height="1662" width_o="1200" height_o="1662" Collaborator: Erin Biediger Critic: Adam Frampton, Only If Newburgh is a changing city, with Downing Park at the center. Over the last century, Newburgh has gone from a wealthy trade hub to a struggling fringe city. A new wave of immigrants are bringing life and a fresh identity to the city, yet it remains segregated, with the centrally located park dividing groups defined by density, age, economic stability, and race. The Loop is a proposal that strives to connect disparate populations along the periphery of Downing Park, improving circulation while breaking down the scale of the site into clearly defined spaces to gather. The loop itself&nbsp; begins to take shape by responding to the existing landscape of the park as well as known pedestrian zones around the site, providing equal access to communities on each side of the park. Rooms, or spaces within the park defined by specific topographic conditions, provide clear areas for gathering, much like in Olmsted &amp; Vaux’s original plan for the park. The space between the rooms is filled with ‘un-maintained’ native grasses, left to grow wild as a restorative meadow and define the boundary of the rooms. By un-maintain-ing 50% of the park, not only does upkeep become more affordable for the city, but Downing Park becomes a small yet important player in the larger ecosystem of the Hudson Valley, giving land back to pollinators and wildlife. Architectural interventions are inserted into the interstitial spaces that form when the loop intersects a room, adding another layer of draw and programming into the park. The resulting design will provide a revitalization of a historical asset to the people of Newburgh, and encourage neighbors from diverse economic and social backgrounds to come together.&nbsp; <img 2019, Columbia GSAPP Critic: Christoph Kumpusch, Forward Slash Humans spend about one third of their life in an unconscious state - with our minds still active throughout. No matter who we are, we all sleep - and we all dream. The nature of the unconscious is a storehouse of repressed memories specific to the individual and our ancestral past. This past, immortalized in our collective unconscious, is shared with other members of the human species, permeating race, age, gender, and culture. Scientists are still inconclusive on the cause and significance of dreams, leaving a lot of effort dedicated to studying the recording of dreams: a new media and knowledge to collect and share. Since the nineteenth century, the Lower East Side has developed a rich history as the center of New York City immigrant life and cultural diversity. The neighborhood retains parts of that heritage today, with over half of the population speaking a non-English language. As a public institution within this context, it is imperative for the library to form common ground and accommodate populations with varying levels of literacy in a multitude of languages. Studies show that sharing dreams, a mutual media and vocabulary, promotes the ability to project empathy or sympathy, a matter of increased importance in today’s political climate. The internet and media circulating in the libraries of today has transformed the world into an infinite and rapidly moving roll of images. Computer monitors and smartphone screens display information from the environment around us, but as a projection from the inside - blurring the boundary between what is real and what is a projection. A dream can be thought of in the same way, a fantasy version of our outside environment projected from the inside. The Library of Dreams is a physical space that embodies the moment when one recognizes that they are dreaming, in a moment of self-realization and discovery, and are faced with the choice to wake up YorkFall 2018, Columbia GSAPP Critic: Anna Puigjaner, MAIO Reclaiming the Common is an exploration in reclaiming non-utilized public space and “the common” as a place to foster integration between two adjacent, but separate, communities on two scales. While the residents of the Amsterdam Houses and their neighbors are different in racial makeup and economic wealth, commonalities in age offer an opportunity to bridge the divide. In order to achieve this reality, the following 3 strategies were utilized: redefinition at the edge condition of the site and how it interacts with the outside environment, re-programming the interior voids as community-oriented public space, and improving vertical circulation with a series of sky bridges and terraces that reclaim the common for the residents of the Amsterdam Houses. The Amsterdam Houses is a ‘Tower in the Park’ public affordable housing project in the Upper West Side of New York City. Once a successful experiment in integration, decades of exponential rising rent and gentrification has given no choice for many of the residents and their descendents to stay put in decaying facilities. As a ‘Naturally Occurring Retirement Community’, the Amsterdam Houses have access to funding for services like health screenings, bilingual social work assistance, and benefit entitlements. However, the current facilities are falling apart and carry a stigma which is driving down attendance. Additionally, fencing and a large retaining wall at the perimeter present a physical barrier between residents and their designated public space, and between the Amsterdam Houses and the outside community. With the addition of retail spaces for lease within the exterior-facing voids along the outer sidewalk edge, a redistribution of existing social services and amenities within the interior-facing facades, and a series of terraces and balconies to connect residents to an adjacent tower, the residents of the Amsterdam Houses convert valuable exterior void space to capital, and reclaim the interior and vertical voids of the site as common space to foster integration and a stronger community. <img width="6600" height="6600" width_o="6600" height_o="6600"
